Parallel Workshop 1 EMI Training

“Communication Skills for Teaching Success: Writing, Design and Presentation for COIL-Based EMI”

Instructors: Dr. Oliver Belarga (Kansai University), Sajjad Pouromid (Kansai University)

The workshop will introduce Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) as a way to tackle the challenge of EMI-bound faculty development. The workshop is organized as a two-section event: oral and written communication sessions. Participants will have the chance to practice oral communication skills needed for a COIL class and several written communication skill activities will be reinforced afterwards. By the end of the workshop, the participants will have developed an English syllabus for a COIL course comprising the instructor’s profile, course profile, goal statements and evaluation criteria.  Since the session will be an interactive one, the prospective participants are strongly recommended to bring along with themselves the syllabus (Japanese or English) of a course they are thinking of teaching in English.

Parallel Workshop 2 IT Training

“IIGE COIL-Matching Site・Preview of COIL-customized web interface"

Instructors: Matthew Hightower (Class2Class), Dr. Stephen Tschudi (Class2Class)

In the past educators regardless of technological experience, discipline, or class level have been forced to use many tools and software companies to set up, create, and facilitate COIL exchanges. Where do I find a partner? How and where are we going to build out our lessons and activities? What apps should our Students use to communicate? What apps or tools are other teachers using? Can we use your LMS? These are just a few of the questions and problems we have heard educators ask time and time again and is the reason why we have set out to create an all-in-one platform specifically designed for COIL educators. In this workshop we will dive into what tools/software companies are currently being used by COIL educators around the world, walk you through a new all-in-one platform created by Class2Class/IIGE, and offers tips and tools for designing of COIL exchange on the Class2Class/IIGE COIL platform. The target audience for this 3-hour workshop comprises educators, administrators, and instructional designers working with international partners to design COIL exchanges for defined learner groups with specific aims.
